Citizen Marin Commentary | Susan Kirsch
On 1/26/15, the Marin IJ published an article headlined “Marinwood Plaza analysis finds no toxic risk to wells, creek; ranchers unassuaged.” A new consulting firm conducts a new study and discovers there’s no problem! Complete article here.
But on 3/29/14, the IJ reported that the San Francisco Bay Regional Water Quality Control Board had discovered trichloroethylene, a chemical used at the former dry cleaner site, had contaminated groundwater within 550 feet of a drinking water well at nearby Silveira Ranches. Locals were concerned. Complete article here.
The amazing new findings prompted me to write in rhyme. . .
Studies, studies everywhere
And na’er a one to trust.
Experts tell us what’s OK
And bones begin to rust.
Drought is bad, drought is over
Marinwood toxins will grow clover.
Complexities are so immense
We pay consultants at great expense.
And then like Santa, at the end of the day
Experts fly away on their shiny new sleigh.
Now Prancer, now Dancer we hear them exclaim,
Clean up all the messes, while I catch a plane.
The staff smile and dream of their generous pensions
While taxpayers are billed amidst increasing tensions.
MTC, consultants, ABAG to boot
They try to convince themselves we don’t give a hoot.
But they’re mightily wrong. We really do care.
We’ll stand up for sound studies and what’s really fair.
We’ll stick with each other. We’ll go to the mat.
We’ll write and petition, and take turns at bat.
For at the end of the day, it’s justice that matters.
We want the truth, not fiction that flatters.
